Chapter 2

Chapter 2 introduced me to the importance of communicating properly through email and understanding basic “net etiquette.” The chapter then explains the various parts of an email message and what you see on your screen when you are composing an email or receiving one. I have been using email for a while for both school and for work, but I can genuinely say that I never knew what the CC or the BCC fields were for or how to use them correctly. The chapter then outlines when to use a more formal tone in emails versus when a casual tone is appropriate, which I think most people (myself included) should already know.
Toward the end of Chapter 2, Section 1, the book starts diving into spam. As a Gmail user, I have obviously dealt with spam before, but I never knew how massive a problem it is globally. According to the book, “over 250 million emails are sent every day, and over 90% of those messages are spam.” That number is unfathomable and I had no idea it was so out of control. I also never realized how difficult spam is to control, especially from a legal standpoint.

To wrap up the chapter the book walks you through how to set up a new Gmail account, which is something I have done plenty of times already. Understanding how to properly use CC and BCC will help me write more profesional emails and communicate more effectively in both school and future work settings. Going into this chapter, I thought it would just reinforce concepts I already knew, and not teach me anything new, but I was wrong. I look forward to learning more as this class moves forward.
